Holden produced the Torana from 1967 to 1980, but in what remains one of the company's best automotive upgrade packages ever, the iconic A9X was slotted into the mix in 1977. Notably, the A9X is also probably the best representation of the "Torana" nameplate.

The Torana story started in the 1960s like the Nova's. General Motors-Holden had been receiving and assembling CKD kits of the Vauxhall Viva, as well as other foreign GM models like the Chevrolet Impala. GM-H decided to eliminate other GM brands from the Australian market, and so the Viva became a Holden Torana in 1967.

Increased racing speeds had compromised the Torana's disc/drum brake system, so Holden added four-wheel disc brakes to address that shortcoming. In road trim, an A9X produced 236hp, sending it down the ¼ mile in 15.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 133mph. In racing trim, the 308 churned out more than 400hp, lifting the top speed to 165mph.

Since 1974, the V8 Torana had delivered four-door performance for road or race circuit, but Holden's next move was to remove two of the doors, reshape the roof and turn its grunty sedan into a sporty hatchback. Basic models were available in SL trim, with six-cylinder engines or the 4.2-litre V8.

The Holden Torana was one of Australian's mid-size car manufacturers during the 1967 to 1980 timeframe, also known for its performance cars because they were Australian's first. In fact, Torana means 'to fly' in Aboriginal. The very first Holden Torana was the HB series four-cylinder manufactured and released in 1967.

The Holden Torana LC GTR-XU1 was released in 1970 after having been developed at Holden by Harry Firth of the Holden Dealer Team and his engineers. For homologation purposes it had to be road legal, and it had to somehow skirt GM's racing ban that was in place at the time.
