Rex operated transatlantic crossings from Italy with its running mate, Conte di Savoia prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. Rex maintained a commercial service in the Mediterranean Sea for eight years, but when Italy entered the war in June 1940 Rex was laid up for safe-keeping.

SS Conte di Savoia ("Count of Savoy") was an Italian ocean liner built in 1932 at the Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico, Trieste. [1] Conte di Savoia was originally ordered for the Lloyd Sabaudo line; however, after a merger with the Navigazione Generale Italiana, the ship was completed for the newly formed Italia Flotte Riunite. [1]

Conte di Savoia was styled as the more luxurious of the two. Two ships were commissioned with a post war subsidy. The Andrea Doria first sailed the Atlantic in the winter of 1953. Her sister Cristoforo Colombo launched a year later. They were nearly identical at more than 29,000 tons.

"CONTE DI SAVOIA" was completed in 1932 and left on her maiden voyage to New York in November of that year, photo above, she was 48.500 G.T and had a very impressive top speed of 27.3 knots. This beautiful ship was the first one to have gyroscopic stabilizers fitted to try and reduce the rolling during Transatlantic Crossings on the North.

There were considerations to use the ship on the South American route as an emigrant carrier with third class only, but due to shortage of money, material and shipyard facilities, the project was shelved. Sadly, the Conte di Savoia was considered a too expensive and difficult task in 1950, and she was sent to ship breakers in Monfalcone.
